STUART, Fla. – A doorbell camera video capturing a disturbing scene of a dog being abused has led to the arrest of a Stuart man by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. Donald Stickens III faces allegations of mistreating his girlfriend’s nine-year-old golden retriever spitz mix outside their apartment, as revealed by court records.
The incident came to light after the video surfaced on the building’s portal, prompting an investigation by MCSO. Despite the attack occurring on August 20, authorities were only made aware of it days later upon viewing the footage uploaded to the portal.
The footage showed Stickens and his girlfriend, along with two other individuals, in the process of moving out. When confronted by deputies, Stickens’ girlfriend confirmed the dog in distress belonged to her, while Stickens himself remained uncooperative and agitated during questioning.
The dog, named Stella, was removed from the home and taken to The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast for examination. A forensic veterinarian from the American Association for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was enlisted to assess Stella’s condition.
The veterinarian’s report indicated that Stella displayed signs of extreme distress and fear, in addition to suffering from physical injuries. One of Stickens’ roommates attested to the volatile environment in the apartment, citing multiple altercations between Stickens and his girlfriend.
As the investigation unfolded, it was discovered that Stickens was already in custody on separate drug-related charges. While in jail, Stickens admitted to harming both his girlfriend and the dog, expressing regret for his actions.
The MCSO released the doorbell camera footage of the attack, cautioning viewers about its disturbing nature. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of identifying and reporting animal abuse.
The video evidence, coupled with witness statements and veterinary assessments, ultimately led to Stickens facing charges of animal abuse. As the legal process unfolds, advocates emphasize the significance of speaking out against cruelty towards animals and taking action to protect vulnerable creatures in our communities.
