Assassination Fallout: 71-Year-Old Arrested for Attempting to Shield Suspected Gunman in Charlie Kirk Case

Provo, Utah — A 71-year-old man is facing serious charges after allegedly attempting to assist a suspected gunman in evading capture following the shooting of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University on September 10. Authorities say George Zinn tried to create a diversion by falsely claiming to be the shooter.

Utah County Sheriff Michael Smith revealed that Zinn confessed to police he had yelled he was responsible for the crime to provide cover for the actual shooter, identified as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson. Zinn’s actions drew attention during the chaotic moments that followed the incident, which left Kirk dead.

Initially detained by authorities, Zinn was quickly released before investigators connected him to the ongoing case. Following Zinn’s arrest, Robinson expressed to a roommate that police had apprehended what he referred to as a “crazy old dude,” suggesting Zinn’s attempt to mislead investigators was noted.

Zinn now faces charges of obstruction of justice and possession of child sexual abuse materials, raising alarms about his background and intent. Sheriff Smith clarified that there is currently no evidence to suggest Zinn collaborated with Robinson in the killing itself. Zinn allegedly shouted provocatively, “I shot him – now shoot me,” as police arrived, creating further confusion.

Court documents indicate that when questioned about the firearm used in the shooting, Zinn refused to disclose its location. He is also held on charges related to child exploitation, with authorities reporting that over 20 explicit images of minors were discovered during their investigation.

During a hearing, a judge deemed Zinn a “substantial danger” to the community, subsequently ordering that he remain in custody without bail. There is currently no indication from court records regarding whether Zinn has secured legal representation.

Known for his disruptive behavior at public events, Zinn has a history of minor crimes, including a notable incident where he sent threatening correspondence to a marathon organizer shortly after the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. Reports indicate that he frequently attended events in Salt Lake City, often with the intent to provoke and challenge speakers.

In the meantime, Robinson, the prime suspect in Kirk’s shooting, has been charged with multiple counts including aggravated murder. Kirk was a prominent figure in American conservatism, known for his controversial views on social issues. His assassination has ignited debates surrounding political violence and the societal impacts of such acts.

Kirk was shot while hosting an event at Utah Valley University, an act authorities have classified as a targeted attack. The shocking nature of Kirk’s death prompted public figures, including former President Donald Trump, to express their grief, with Trump labeling Kirk a “patriot” and lamenting the tragic situation as a “dark moment for America.”
