Assault: Teen E-Bike Gangs Fuel Outrage After Violent Attack on Hermosa Beach Man

Hermosa Beach, California — A disturbing incident involving middle school students has raised alarm in a coastal community after a 57-year-old man was violently attacked, prompting police to arrest two teenagers. The shocking event has amplified concerns over youth e-bike groups that have reportedly been linked to increasing lawlessness in the area.

Authorities say the assault occurred on November 21 when a group of teenagers on e-bikes surrounded the victim in an alley near the Hermosa Beach Pier. Surveillance footage captured the shocking moment the group knocked him to the ground before repeatedly kicking and punching him. One of the attackers could be heard yelling “he’s dead, he’s dead” as they fled the scene. The incident left the victim hospitalized due to his injuries.

In the aftermath, Manhattan Beach Middle School Principal Matthew Horvath confirmed in a letter to parents that some students from the school were involved in the assault. Their identities have not yet been disclosed. The principal expressed a shared sense of concern and outrage, emphasizing the need for privacy as the police investigation continues.

Hermosa Beach police have since identified five minors believed to be involved in the attack, ranging in age from 13 to 15 years old. Two of the principal assailants were arrested on Wednesday on felony assault charges and taken to a juvenile detention facility.

The incident has reignited discussions about the troubling trend of violence among youth e-bike groups operating in the region. During a recent public safety forum, community members voiced their fears and frustrations regarding such gangs, notably one dubbed the “Goons” and another known as the “Redondo Beach Killers.” These groups have previously been linked to various offenses, including fireworks incidents and vandalism.

Detective Dalton Blumenfeld noted that while reports of these groups have been rising, they are not officially recognized as criminal gangs by the Department of Justice. Still, their activities have increasingly disturbed residents, prompting calls for accountability and action from law enforcement.

Community tensions flared during another recent gathering, where concerned residents demanded more stringent measures to protect public safety and curb the violent actions of e-biking teenagers. The overwhelming sentiment expressed by the community is a deep-seated desire for reassurance and effective intervention in response to the growing incidents of youth violence.

As local authorities continue their investigation, many residents remain vigilant, calling for a united approach to address the underlying issues driving this troubling behavior among young people in the area.
