Assault: Wellington Police Pursue Leads in Churton Park Attack on Youths

Wellington, New Zealand — Authorities are on the lookout for three individuals connected to a violent assault that occurred over the weekend in a local park, leaving several young people injured. The incident unfolded during a supervised gathering in Churton Park on Saturday night when four uninvited guests disrupted the event.

Acting Detective Sergeant Laura Murdoch indicated that about 90 attendees were present when the masked assailants arrived, one brandishing a weapon. The attackers proceeded to launch an “unprovoked and coordinated assault” on seven individuals, all of whom were part of the gathering. Following the violent episode, the perpetrators fled the scene, leaving the victims to seek help.

Seven young people sustained injuries ranging from minor bruises to more severe trauma, including one victim who suffered a fractured skull, requiring surgical intervention. In response, police arrested an 18-year-old man from Tawa, who faces multiple charges that include wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and assault.

In their investigation, police established a timeline indicating the suspects were spotted at a Mobil Gas Station in Johnsonville shortly before the assault occurred. They are now seeking assistance from the public to identify the remaining three individuals believed to be involved in the incident.

Murdoch described the appearance of the men sought by law enforcement. One suspect was seen wearing a ’36’ Pittsburgh Steelers NFL jersey, denim shorts, and blue-and-white basketball shoes. Another individual was noted for his black hoodie with “Lakers” branding, dark shorts, and distinctive white sneakers, complemented by a diamante stud earring in his left ear. The third suspect has not been clearly identified in available images but has been described as wearing a grey hoodie, beige or grey shorts, and black sneakers.

Authorities are urging anyone with information, or who was present at the gathering, to contact police through their official website or reference number. For those wishing to provide information while remaining anonymous, Crime Stoppers offers a confidential option via phone or online.

The Wellington police continue their efforts to bring additional clarity to this troubling incident, emphasizing the importance of community support in aiding their investigation. As the search for the remaining suspects continues, residents are reminded to stay vigilant and report any relevant sightings.
