Attack at Maui Target: Man Arrested After Brutal Bat Assault in Parking Lot

MAUI, Hawaii — Authorities have arrested a man following a violent attack at a Target parking lot last week. The incident, which involved an aluminum bat, has left the victim with serious injuries, prompting calls for increased security measures at the store.

The attack occurred Friday evening as a man, who requested anonymity, was leaving the store with his girlfriend and her young daughter. According to the girlfriend, Kiana Bascon, a man confronted them in an aggressive manner, claiming they were responsible for his father’s death. Bascon described the attacker as being disheveled, with his shirt off and carrying a bat.

In a frantic attempt to protect her daughter, Bascon rushed to their car. It was during this moment that the assailant turned his attention to her boyfriend, delivering multiple blows with the bat. A bystander recounted the scene, noting how quickly the violence escalated, with the assailant striking the victim several times before fleeing the scene.

Maui police identified the attacker as 32-year-old Gabriel Pangkee. He faces several charges, including assault and criminal property damage. Records indicate that Pangkee has a lengthy criminal history, with prior convictions that include a felony for burglary.

The victim sustained significant injuries, particularly to his head and hands, which may require surgical intervention. With no health insurance to cover the hospital bills, the financial burden adds to the stress of recovery. Bascon expressed her concern about the situation, stressing the need for the retailer to take responsibility for safety on their property.

In response to the incident, a spokesperson for Target emphasized the company’s commitment to the safety of customers and staff. They expressed their thoughts for the victim and confirmed cooperation with law enforcement throughout the investigation.

As the victim recuperates, Bascon has called for improvements in security at the Target location. The family hopes for greater accountability from the company to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Pangkee is set to appear in court later this month as the investigation continues. Observers in the community are increasingly concerned about safety in public spaces, prompting a broader dialogue on how stores can enhance security measures to protect their patrons.
