Attack: Man Arrested for Violent Bat Assault in Maui Target Parking Lot

MAUI, Hawaii — Police have apprehended a man in connection with a violent assault in a Target parking lot, where he allegedly attacked another individual with a baseball bat. The incident, which occurred last Friday evening, has raised concerns about safety in public spaces.

The victim, who opted to remain anonymous, was leaving the store with his girlfriend and her young daughter when the confrontation began. According to her account, the assailant, later identified as 32-year-old Gabriel Pangkee, appeared aggressive and was shouting, claiming that the group had harmed his father.

In a rapid turn of events, as the girlfriend, Kiana Bascon, scrambled to secure her daughter, the attacker allegedly struck her boyfriend multiple times with the bat. A nearby witness described the assault as quick and ferocious, noting the distinct sounds of the blows echoing through the parking lot before the assailant fled the scene.

Law enforcement officials quickly reviewed surveillance footage and identified Pangkee as their primary suspect. He has a history of legal troubles, with court records showing nine prior convictions, including a felony for burglary in 2018. Pangkee now faces charges of assault and criminal property damage.

The victim suffered serious injuries from the attack, including damage to his hands and head. His girlfriend expressed deep concern over their financial situation, particularly regarding the medical expenses for surgery and recovery. “He needs his hands not just for work but for normal daily activities,” she said, highlighting the potential long-term impact of the injuries.

Bascon is urging the retailer to take responsibility for the safety of its patrons. She has called on Target to enhance its security measures, emphasizing that such incidents should not occur on their premises. “We want them to acknowledge what happened and take steps to prevent it in the future,” she stated.

A spokesperson for Target responded by stating that the safety of customers and staff is paramount. They expressed sympathy for the victim and noted their cooperation with local law enforcement during the ongoing investigation.

Pangkee is scheduled to appear in court on January 13, as the community grapples with the aftermath of the violent encounter.
