Kaiama, Nigeria — The recent attack on Woro, a community in the Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, has left the region in shock and mourning, with over 100 residents reportedly killed and many homes set ablaze. The assault, attributed to armed bandits, lasted several hours before security forces were able to respond, raising serious concerns about safety in the area.
Eyewitnesses and local authorities describe the event as one of the most devastating in recent memory, particularly for a town that has experienced increasing tension. Residents reported horrific scenes, with some trapped in their homes and others inside a church as the violence unfolded. Salihu, the local community leader, noted that many victims were unable to be identified due to the nature of their injuries.
The state has increasingly pointed to the involvement of Islamic extremist groups behind such acts of violence. Following the attack, President Bola Tinubu ordered additional military resources to be deployed in the region, including an army battalion intended to bolster security measures and deter further attacks.
A recent disclosure by Salihu on News Central TV highlighted a warning letter received months earlier, which suggested that extremists were planning to enter the village for preaching. After receiving this letter, he promptly reported it to local security agencies, including the Department of State Services. The letter originated from Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’adati wal-Jihad (JAS), a faction of Boko Haram, indicating a premeditated effort to infiltrate the community.
Amidst the chaos of the attack, a local resident described the panic that ensued at the Kara cattle market, a bustling hub of activity in the town. Reports of armed individuals entering the market caused widespread fear and a rush for safety, leading to a stampede among shoppers and traders. Many were forced to abandon their belongings as they fled from the threat.
Despite military presence in the area subsequent to the attacks, residents have expressed frustration over the perceived lack of effective security measures. Some locals have accused soldiers of doing little more than patrolling streets without taking decisive action to protect the community from ongoing threats.
