LOVELAND, Colo. — A violent attack at a local tanning salon left two individuals hospitalized and one man in custody following a random assault on Tuesday evening. The incident, which occurred at Endless Summer Tanning on Madison Avenue, has drawn attention to issues of public safety and the unpredictable nature of such acts.
Kyle Mathew Behrens, 20, was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including two counts of attempted first-degree murder. The attack commenced around 7 p.m. when Behrens allegedly entered the salon and began assaulting a 21-year-old employee with a hammer. Police reports indicate that the employee sustained serious injuries after being struck multiple times and was dragged into a side room by Behrens.
During the chaos, the victim managed to escape into another room with a customer, where they both called 911 for assistance. As they sought refuge, Behrens reportedly attempted to barricade the entrance, but his actions allowed the victims a critical moment to flee.
Once inside the room, the pair faced Behrens again when he broke through the door, this time armed with a knife. Despite the odds, the victims fought back and were able to disarm the attacker. Their quick thinking and collaboration allowed law enforcement to arrive just in time to apprehend Behrens.
Both victims were transported to a nearby hospital for their injuries, though further information regarding their conditions has not been released. Medical personnel treated Behrens before he was booked into the Larimer County Jail, where he is currently held on a $500,000 cash-only bond.
Loveland police praised the bravery of the victims, emphasizing their determination to survive in a terrifying situation. “What they did was incredible,” said a spokesperson from the department. “They fought not only for their lives but also managed to get help while under attack.”
Authorities believe the attack was random, with no prior connections between Behrens and the victims. Investigators noted that the tanning salon had no history of prior incidents involving the suspect, who is known to be transient and previously lived in the Longmont area.
In the wake of the incident, the salon issued a heartfelt message on social media commending the victims’ “unimaginable bravery” and highlighting their resilience during a terrifying ordeal. Acknowledging the trauma of the event, the post reinforced a sense of community and support among clients and employees.
As the investigation continues, the Loveland Police Department remains focused on understanding the motives behind such senseless violence and ensuring the safety of its residents.
