Celebration of Life in New Orleans: Community Rallies to Honor Teen Slain Outside Dooky Chase’s

NEW ORLEANS — In a poignant gathering outside Dooky Chase’s restaurant on Tuesday, a crowd of hundreds came together to honor the life of 19-year-old Kareem Harris, who was fatally shot just days earlier. The outpouring of grief transformed into a celebration of life, underscored by joyous music as a brass band led mourners through the Treme neighborhood in a spirited second line.

Harris’s family, including his eldest sister Kia Simmons, reflected on the loss as a moment of both sorrow and celebration. “He was only 19, enjoying life to the fullest. We want to cherish the moments we had together,” Simmons said. She mentioned that the gathering aimed to celebrate not only the good times with her brother but also the challenges they faced together.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, Harris’s tragic incident unfolded when he attempted to flee from an unidentified gunman into the restaurant. Officers reported that he stumbled upon entering the foyer, where he was shot multiple times. In the chaos, gunfire also struck three patrons inside the establishment, leaving two in critical condition after surgeries.

The celebration event’s organizers underscored a need for resilience in the community, particularly in light of the recent violence. “Our goal is to show that this neighborhood remains a safe place,” said Michael Willis, CEO of Help Other People Endure. He added that the gathering served as a testament to the strength of the community.

Simmons expressed her gratitude toward neighbors who have provided information regarding the events surrounding her brother’s death. “Many have stepped forward to help seek justice for my little brother, and I truly appreciate their support,” she stated.

Darlene Cusanza, executive director of Crimestoppers GNO, expressed concern over the limited number of tips received about the shooting. She noted that fear may deter individuals within close-knit communities from sharing information. “When familiarity exists, fear can also take hold. We want to assure everyone that their anonymity is guaranteed,” Cusanza explained.

To encourage more tips, the reward for information leading to the shooter’s arrest has been increased to $13,500. “We’re here to partner with the community. We can amplify your voice and have seen many successes in the past,” Cusanza added.

As the community comes together to mourn and celebrate, the hope for justice remains as strong as the bonds forged in shared grief. The calling for unity and action continues in New Orleans, not just for Kareem Harris but for all those affected by violence within the city.
