New York City, NY: Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, was apprehended in Pennsylvania on Monday. This came nearly a week after the targeted shooting outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel. Brian Thompson, aged 50, was fatally shot outside the New York Hilton Midtown around 6:45 a.m.
The 26-year-old suspect, wanted in connection with Thompson’s murder, was initially arrested on a forgery charge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after presenting a fake ID. He has been charged with several crimes, including carrying a gun without a license, forgery, falsely identifying himself to authorities, and possession of “instruments of crime.”
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that the suspect is believed to be the individual connected to the insurance executive’s death. Eyewitness News and ABC News have been reconstructing the events leading up to the shooting while investigators continue to piece together the timeline of the incident.
Law enforcement sources revealed that the suspected shooter arrived in New York last month from Atlanta, entering the city by bus. Surveillance footage captured his arrival at the Port Authority Bus Terminal on November 24, with later footage showing him checking into a hostel on the Upper West Side using a fraudulent New Jersey license.
The suspect was seen at various locations before the shooting, including outside the Frederick Douglass Houses public housing project and inside a Starbucks. It is reported that he arrived at the shooting scene moments before Thompson and appeared to have been waiting for his target.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene, first on foot before being spotted riding an electric bicycle north on Avenue of the Americas. He was later seen entering Central Park before his eventual arrest in Pennsylvania. The suspect, identified as Luigi Mangione, was found with a ghost gun and a suppressor, along with a fake New Jersey driver’s license similar to the one used in New York.
Authorities praised the collaborative effort of law enforcement and the public, leading to the suspect’s apprehension. The NYPD is currently tracing the suspect’s movements from New York City to Pennsylvania to gain a clearer understanding of the events leading up to the tragic shooting.
