BOSTON, MA – A 27-year-old man in Massachusetts is facing serious charges after allegedly biting off a piece of a police officer’s ear during a domestic violence incident, according to Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden.
The incident occurred on August 30 when officers responded to a call at the Chelsea Community Center. The suspect, identified as Carlos Sanabria of Chelsea, was uncooperative and refused to show police a video of a domestic incident involving his girlfriend. The situation escalated quickly, with Sanabria becoming increasingly upset and eventually attacking an officer, resulting in the gruesome injury.
Hayden emphasized the dangers that police officers face when responding to domestic violence calls, highlighting the unpredictability of such situations. He commended the injured officer for his courage and wished him a speedy recovery.
Sanabria was arraigned on charges including mayhem, strangulation, assault and battery on a police officer, assault to murder, and resisting arrest. Following a dangerousness hearing, a judge ordered him to be held without bail until a further hearing on September 20.
In response to the incident, Hayden urged victims of domestic violence to seek help by calling 911. He also provided information about resources such as SafeLink, a statewide domestic violence hotline, and RAINN, a national anti-sexual violence organization.
The injured officer was promptly treated and transported to a local hospital for further medical attention. The seriousness of the charges against Sanabria underscores the importance of addressing and preventing domestic violence in the community. The upcoming hearing will determine the next steps in the legal process for this case.
The incident serves as a reminder of the risks and challenges that law enforcement officers face daily while carrying out their duties to protect and serve the community. It also highlights the need for continued support for victims of domestic violence and the importance of raising awareness about resources available to those in need.
