Georgia man stalking a woman lights her house on fire while she’s inside with her young child

CALHOUN, GA – A man from Georgia is facing multiple felony charges after authorities say he set a house on fire with a mother and her young child inside, just months after being convicted for stalking the same woman.

Charles Battles, 46, was arrested Sunday following a search that began after firefighters and sheriff’s deputies responded to a blaze in Gordon County early Saturday morning. Investigators allege Battles ignited the fire around sunrise at the Johnson Drive residence before fleeing the scene.

The woman and her small child managed to escape the burning structure, according to officials. Both survived, though details regarding any injuries sustained have not been released. The fire completely destroyed the home, prompting an intensive investigation and a swift effort to track down the suspect.

Court records indicate Battles has a history of targeting the woman. He pleaded guilty in October to an aggravated stalking charge and was on probation at the time of the fire. Previous incidents detailed in charging documents describe how Battles, in July, confronted the victim by climbing onto her car and causing significant property damage. The documents suggest his intent was to frighten and intimidate her.

Authorities say the restraining order did little to deter Battles. Evidence from the fire scene reportedly included physical, electronic, and testimonial proof placing Battles at the site of the arson. Following the early morning fire, law enforcement coordinated a manhunt throughout the area.

Battles was found at a private residence in the Scottsville area, where deputies say local citizens aided in his apprehension. He was taken into custody without resistance, ending what officials described as a tense and urgent search given the nature of the allegations.

The charges against Battles now include attempted murder, first-degree arson, and aggravated stalking, underscoring the escalating danger of the situation. Sheriff’s deputies emphasized the importance of quickly resolving the case to ensure the safety of the community and to bring justice for the victims.

Officials have credited the cooperation between law enforcement and residents for the swift arrest. Battles remains in custody as the investigation continues, with authorities committed to pursuing the case fully as it moves through the court system.
