Limuru, Kiambu County – Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has raised serious allegations against unidentified individuals within the government, claiming they were behind a violent assault during a funeral he attended in Limuru, Kiambu County. The incident left several mourners injured and led to damage to Gachagua’s car after it was pelted with stones.
On social media, Gachagua expressed his belief that the attack was a deliberate act of intimidation orchestrated by government operatives. He recounted how a group of armed individuals, armed with stones, machetes, and iron bars, targeted mourners, including children, at the funeral of 23-year-old Erastus Nduati.
The situation escalated when the attackers followed Gachagua to his car, where they continued their assault by throwing stones and iron bars, forcing him to drive away amid the chaos.
Expressing his dismay, Gachagua condemned the violence and accused the state of involvement in the incident. He highlighted the distress faced by the grieving family, who had to seek refuge despite mourning the loss of their loved one.
Furthermore, Gachagua claimed that his security detail was withdrawn earlier in the week by the government, leaving him vulnerable to such attacks. Despite these challenges, he emphasized his commitment to supporting Kenyans in need and vowed not to be deterred by such acts of violence.
The chaos erupted at the funeral before Gachagua could address the mourners, with rowdy individuals attempting to disrupt the event by targeting the tent where he was seated with his supporters. The situation worsened when former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi discussed political matters, leading to further disruptions.
Security personnel intervened to protect Gachagua and escort him to safety as the attackers attempted to breach the tent. Other dignitaries present, including various MPs and MCAs, were caught in the commotion, highlighting the tense political atmosphere in the region.
Gachagua’s allies attributed the attack to supporters of President William Ruto and accused them of seeking to undermine Gachagua’s political standing. Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa claimed that the violence was part of a larger scheme to weaken Gachagua’s influence and create tensions in the region.
The incident reflects growing political tensions in the area, particularly following Gachagua’s impeachment and the recent appointment of a new Deputy President, intensifying divisions and hostilities among different political factions.
