PHOENIX — A family is expressing deep gratitude to two courageous strangers who saved the life of a 71-year-old man during a violent assault as he walked his dog last Saturday. Jeff Zimmerman, who has been battling a brain tumor, suffered serious injuries including multiple fractures and trauma to his eye during the attack.
According to family members, the incident unfolded when a cyclist assaulted him unexpectedly. The attack left Zimmerman with severe head injuries, complicating his ongoing treatment for his medical condition. His daughter, Kiera Zimmerman, characterized her father as “the most loving guy” and praised his resilience, noting that the actions of the bystanders were critical in his survival.
Kiera emphasized the serendipity of the situation, saying, “The fact that they were in the right place at the right time is literally an act of God.” She firmly believes that their intervention made all the difference, allowing her father to pull through during a life-threatening ordeal.
Following the incident, Zimmerman spent four days in the intensive care unit before being moved to a trauma care facility. Despite the gravity of his situation, Kiera remained optimistic and full of gratitude, saying, “I can’t even be upset because I’m just so thankful that he’s alive.”
The impact of the assault extends beyond physical injuries. The family is facing mounting medical bills, with costs surpassing $200,000, which also include ongoing cancer treatments. To help alleviate the financial burden, they launched a GoFundMe campaign that has successfully raised over $25,000.
Support from the community has played a vital role during this challenging time. Friends and strangers alike have rallied around the family, sending well wishes and contributing to their fundraising efforts. “It’s heartwarming to see how many people care,” Kiera said, reflecting on the outpouring of support that has brought comfort amid the crisis.
As the Zimmermans navigate this difficult period, they remain focused on recovery and healing. They are dedicated to ensuring Jeff receives all necessary medical attention and support for both his trauma recovery and cancer treatment, demonstrating their unwavering hope and determination in the face of adversity.
