Hindu Family Attacked in Assam Village Sparks Outrage and Protests

GUWAHATI, India – A recent violent attack on a Hindu family in Gorumara Doloni village, situated 40 kilometers from Guwahati under the jurisdiction of Mayong police station, has sparked widespread outrage and demonstrations in Assam’s Morigaon district. The incident, which occurred on February 9, led to villagers taking to the streets on February 12 to demand the immediate arrest of those responsible and increased security measures in the area following a lack of progress by local authorities within 72 hours of the attack.

According to reports, the conflict arose when a group of individuals allegedly trespassed on the land of a Hindu family in Doloni village to cut grass without permission. When the family confronted them, a larger group armed with machetes and sharp weapons launched an attack, resulting in severe injuries to five family members, including a woman and a minor. The injured were promptly taken to Guwahati Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Despite the family filing a First Information Report (FIR) at Mayong police station on the same day, no arrests have been made as of the latest update. This delay in police action has fueled discontent among local Hindu communities, who are alleging a pattern of targeted violence in the region.

On February 12, a large group of villagers blocked roads and staged protests, accusing authorities of neglecting their safety concerns. The community is calling for immediate and decisive action to prevent future risks to Hindu villagers. Senior police and administrative officials have since intervened, promising a swift investigation and the arrest of all culprits involved.

The incident highlights the underlying tensions in Morigaon’s riverine areas along the Brahmaputra river, where demographic shifts over the years have reportedly resulted in Hindu families becoming minorities. Villagers have expressed concerns over targeted violence and intimidation, with many Hindu households allegedly facing pressure from majority Muslim communities, some of whom are believed to have migrated from Bangladesh.

Previous reports from local sources have documented similar clashes in the region, drawing attention to communal disputes and land conflicts. Amid mounting pressure from the public, the Morigaon district administration has pledged to take prompt and effective action against those responsible for the attack on the Hindu family.
