Hospital CEO Condemns Jail Sentence for Man who Attacked Health Workers

Wrexham, Wales – The Chief Executive of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board has strongly criticized the actions of a man recently sentenced to 14 months in prison for assaulting four staff members at Glan Clwyd Hospital in North Wales. Jamie McAdam, from Colwyn Bay, exhibited aggressive behavior while intoxicated and under the influence of ketamine during treatment at the hospital on December 6, 2023. He pleaded guilty to four counts of assaulting emergency workers, including spitting, biting, and verbal abuse towards the staff.

McAdam’s violent actions continued as he bit through a cannula and attempted to smear his blood on nurses while claiming he had hepatitis. Despite being sedated for a CT scan, his hostility persisted, leading to further disruption and the intervention of North Wales Police for his arrest. The court disclosed McAdam’s extensive criminal history, with 28 previous convictions for 53 offenses.

Carol Shillabeer, the Chief Executive of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, commended the bravery of the health workers and reaffirmed the board’s commitment to ensuring their safety. She emphasized that such aggression towards staff is unacceptable and that any threats or violence will be prosecuted. Judge Nicola Jones at Caernarfon Crown Court also condemned McAdam’s actions, highlighting his intent to cause serious harm to those assisting him.

Shillabeer acknowledged the challenging circumstances some individuals face when seeking healthcare services but stressed that staff should not have to endure such violence. She expressed gratitude to North Wales Police and the Crown Prosecution Service for their role in bringing McAdam to justice. Instances of extreme aggression like this are rare, emphasizing the importance of supporting healthcare workers who provide vital services under pressure.

The case serves as a reminder of the risks healthcare workers face and the need to address and prevent violence in healthcare settings. The dedication of these workers, combined with the collaboration of law enforcement and legal agencies, underscores the collective effort to ensure a safe environment for both staff and patients. Moving forward, measures to protect healthcare workers and uphold a zero-tolerance policy towards violence in healthcare facilities are crucial to maintaining a secure and supportive healthcare system.
