LAS VEGAS — A routine eviction took a violent turn when a constable deputy suffered injuries while serving an eviction notice. The deputy and a maintenance worker were attacked with a machete during the incident, seizing the day and escalating it into an unexpected situation.
Emergency responders treated the deputy for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital. While such confrontations are infrequent, they underscore the potential dangers faced by law enforcement personnel tasked with civil duties.
Ryan Schmall, a retired Nevada peace officer, shed light on the responsibilities of constables, who operate as certified peace officers authorized to wield firearms and other tools of law enforcement. Schmall emphasized that constables play an essential role in enforcing civil laws, executing court orders, evicting tenants, and serving restraining orders.
“Constables often confront individuals whose mental state and legal history are unknown,” Schmall stated, highlighting the unpredictability faced in the line of duty. “They’re peace officers, like any other law enforcement personnel, and their job carries substantial risks.”
While the nature of their work is often misunderstood, scalibility is a key concern for constable offices, which typically have five to ten staff members. Limited resources can force deputies to conduct high-stakes operations solo, potentially increasing their vulnerability to attacks.
“If we had the manpower, we would ideally send two constables for these situations,” Schmall explained. “But resource limitations can sometimes lead to one individual handling the job alone.”
Furthermore, many constables bring a wealth of experience, often being retired officers with extensive training. Yet, incidents like this serve as a stark reminder of how quickly situations can escalate beyond the expected norms of daily operations.
