Inmate Attacks Correctional Officer in Lake County Jail, Faces Multiple Charges

Waukegan, Illinois – In a shocking incident at Lake County Jail, an inmate is facing serious charges after allegedly attacking a correctional officer. The incident occurred on January 3 when a routine check by the officer led to a confrontation with inmate Raymond L. Smith, 46, who was being held on homicide charges.

Smith, who reportedly had an excessive number of books in his cell, became enraged when instructed to return most of them. He clenched his fists and started striking the officer repeatedly. The situation escalated when Smith attempted to choke the officer, leading to the use of pepper spray for subduing him. Backup personnel then transported Smith to a maximum-security pod.

The correctional officer suffered contusions and lacerations from the attack, requiring treatment at a local hospital. Despite the ordeal, he returned to work the following day. Smith now faces three counts of aggravated battery to a correctional officer along with two additional charges. Sheriff John D. Idleburg praised the officer’s bravery in the face of danger and highlighted the daily risks that correctional staff encounter in their line of duty.

Following a court appearance on the new charges, Smith remains in custody. It is crucial to remember that all defendants are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
