Kumasi, Ghana – The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in the Ashanti Region has strongly denounced the violent attack on journalists who were covering the Council of State election on Tuesday, February 11, 2025. The attack, which was characterized as unprovoked, was carried out by individuals suspected to have ties to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the ruling party.
Reports indicate that a group of “macho men” stormed the venue where the election was taking place and disrupted the process by destroying all the ballots while election officials were in the midst of sorting them. As a result of the attack, four journalists sustained serious injuries and had to be hospitalized.
In response to the incident, the GJA issued a statement on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, condemning the assault on press freedom and highlighting the precarious environment in which journalists in the region operate. The association intervened to ensure that the victims received medical attention at various hospitals, including the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
The attack, which occurred in broad daylight, underscored the authorities’ failure to provide adequate protection for media professionals. The GJA called for swift justice, urging for the prompt arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the violent act.
The incident has sparked outrage among journalists and media organizations, with many expressing concern over the safety and security of journalists in Ghana. The assault serves as a stark reminder of the dangers journalists face while carrying out their duties and the urgent need for measures to safeguard their well-being.
As investigations into the attack continue, the GJA has vowed to pursue all legal avenues to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. The association remains steadfast in its commitment to defending press freedom and upholding the rights of journalists in the region.
