ST. ANTHONY, MN – A quiet morning in an apartment complex just outside Minneapolis erupted into violence last week, leaving one man dead, a teenager gravely wounded, and a stunned community grappling with the aftermath of a chilling attack.
In the early hours before dawn, emergency dispatchers received a harrowing call from the Equinox Apartments on Silver Lane Road. When police and medics rushed through the building’s dim corridors, they found a 44-year-old man and his teenage son, both suffering from brutal stab wounds. Despite frantic efforts at the scene, the father could not be saved. His son, clinging to life, was rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center with deep wounds to his chest, neck, and head.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Jonathon Michael Kaupa, lived just steps away across the hall from his alleged victims. Authorities say Kaupa is now facing charges of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.
Prior to the stabbings, residents described waking to the jarring whine of a power tool reverberating through the hallways. The victim’s daughter told investigators that she and her brother were startled from sleep by the noise. They alerted their father, who stepped out to investigate. Within moments, the scene turned bloody, and the teenage boy staggered back inside, drenched in blood and desperately calling 911.
Initial witnesses believed Kaupa was still holed up in his residence, but he had allegedly staged a daring escape, using a rope to lower himself from his apartment balcony to the bitterly cold ground below. Law enforcement launched a manhunt as they learned that Kaupa had slipped away, possibly catching a ride out of the metro area.
Help in the search came from an unexpected source. As police scoured the area, a rideshare driver pulled up to inform them she had just given a ride to a man acting strangely near the apartments. She recounted how she found him lying in the snow, shivering in thin clothing unsuited for Minnesota’s deep freeze. During their drive, the passenger confessed to having been in a fight and handed her a phone smeared with mysterious gore, apologizing and unnervingly claiming it was merely “fish guts.”
Her unease prompted her to circle back for police, convinced that her passenger was somehow involved in the chaos unfolding at the complex. The driver ultimately became a critical witness as authorities pieced together the killer’s flight from the scene.
A day later and miles away, investigators located Kaupa driving his parents’ Mercedes-Benz. He attempted to flee on foot during a traffic stop but was apprehended after a brief pursuit.
According to those familiar with the building, the slain man was employed as a maintenance worker, and Kaupa, who had a history of mental health struggles, had recently expressed paranoid suspicions about the worker entering his apartment—a claim that remains unverified.
Now behind bars at the Ramsey County Adult Detention Center, Kaupa made his first court appearance on Monday. The 44-year-old victim leaves behind a grieving family, including the wounded teenager still hospitalized from the attack.
