Senwabarwana, South Africa — A 28-year-old man is scheduled to appear in local court Wednesday, charged with the murder of a 77-year-old farmer during a violent home invasion over the weekend.
Attie Mahne was reportedly attacked on his farm near Baltimore, in the Capricorn District, early Saturday morning, alongside his wife, Petro. The couple was bound at knifepoint by intruders who subsequently assaulted them and made off with valuables, including cash and a firearm.
Authorities revealed that Mahne had left his home around 4 p.m. on Saturday to check on cattle. When he returned, he was confronted by two assailants who had entered the farmhouse and restrained his wife. The couple was subjected to a brutal attack, which ended with Mahne being found dead at the scene, while Petro was transported to the hospital for treatment and has since been discharged.
The couple’s ordeal began when Mahne discovered the intruders upon his return. His wife was able to raise an alarm, prompting a quick response from local farm watch members. Unfortunately, their arrival was too late to save Mahne.
A swift police investigation led to the arrest of one suspect in the early hours of Tuesday. Members of the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit, along with local detectives and a private security firm, collaborated effectively in the operation that captured the individual.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the rapid response of law enforcement. “This swift arrest demonstrates our commitment to ensuring safety in our communities,” Hadebe stated.
The search for the second suspect remains ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with relevant information to come forward. Police continue to investigate the attack as community members express their shock and concern over the violent incident, which has sparked discussions about safety in rural areas.
Local residents have highlighted the increasing frequency of such violent crimes, raising alarms about safety measures and the need for stronger security on farms. The tragedy has left a lasting impact on the community, emphasizing the urgent need for preventive measures against farm attacks.
