CURRITUCK COUNTY, N.C. — After responding to reports of a shooting on Wedgewood Drive around 5:30 on Friday, Currituck County Sheriff’s Deputies discovered a man with life-threatening injuries who later succumbed to his wounds on the way to the hospital.
The victim was identified as Skylar Haislip, and authorities named the alleged perpetrator as 32-year-old Michael Thomas Harris Jr. from Moyock, North Carolina. Harris attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by canine units on Willow Drive.
Harris has been charged with first-degree murder and is currently being held at the Currituck County Detention Facility without bond. This arrest follows a previous incident in October in Dare County where Harris faced charges of fleeing and eluding the police with a motor vehicle, receiving a misdemeanor for reckless driving in that case.
Local residents expressed shock over the rare occurrence of such a crime in their area. Despite attempts to reach the victim’s family for comment, they were unavailable. The community remains shaken by the tragic events that unfolded on Wedgewood Drive.
