Newark Officer Fatally Shot by 14-Year-Old in Tragic Incident

Newark, New Jersey – A tragic incident unfolded on Friday evening as a Newark police officer, Joseph Azcona, lost his life in the line of duty. The 26-year-old detective and five-year veteran of the department’s intelligence unit was fatally shot while investigating a group of individuals suspected of possessing illegal firearms near Carteret Street and Broadway.

During the confrontation, Azcona and another officer were both shot. The second officer, who remains unidentified, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is currently hospitalized. The perpetrator, a 14-year-old juvenile, has been charged with murder, attempted murder, and weapon possession in connection with the shooting.
