Atlanta, Ga. — The loss of Officer David Rose has left his family and community in deep mourning. Rose, only beginning his law enforcement career, was killed while responding to an active shooter situation at the CDC headquarters in Atlanta.
His aunt, Donna Chambers, expressed her heartbreak over the tragedy, reflecting on the young officer’s promise and dedication. “It’s tough to comprehend how this could happen to someone so young and full of life,” she said. Rose had a vibrant future ahead of him, and his family struggles to come to terms with their grief. Chambers holds a special bond with Rose, recalling being the first person he saw when he was born in Boston, an event she cherishes to this day.
David Rose grew up in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston before relocating to Georgia with his family at age 10. His journey toward public service began early; at 19, he enlisted as a Marine, a testament to his character and desire to protect others.
Deveane Atkinson, Rose’s mother, described her son as fearless, noting his commitment to public safety. “He would lay down his life for others without hesitation,” she said. Tragically, he did just that during the incident on Friday, where he was fatally shot while attempting to safeguard those at the facility.
The fallen officer leaves behind two young children: a six-year-old daughter and a one-year-old son. His wife is also pregnant with their third child. Chambers revealed that his daughter is beginning to grasp the reality of the situation and is asking questions about her father’s absence.
Despite the overwhelming sorrow, those close to Rose want his legacy to reflect his bravery. “It’s hard for us to accept, but we know it could have been much worse if he hadn’t acted as he did,” Chambers said. She emphasized the potential danger the shooter posed to countless lives inside the CDC.
Authorities reported that the shooter had raised concerns regarding the COVID-19 vaccine prior to opening fire, striking fear into the lives of those present. The suspect ultimately took his own life, making a chaotic situation even more tragic.
A memorial has begun to take shape outside the CDC, with friends, family, and community members coming together to honor Rose’s sacrifice. As the mourning continues, the call for support and remembrance of those who protect the community grows stronger. The family seeks comfort in knowing that Rose acted heroically on that fateful day.
