HAWAII, Hawaii – Authorities in Big Island successfully located and confronted alleged police officer shooter, Christopher Lucrisia, resulting in a fatal shootout on March 16. The island-wide manhunt for the 39-year-old suspect came to a dramatic conclusion in Mountain View, where police engaged in gunfire with Lucrisia, ultimately leading to his death.
Hawaiʻi Police Department Chief Benjamin Moszkowicz expressed gratitude that no one else was injured during the confrontation. However, he noted that their primary objective was to apprehend Lucrisia without harm, which unfortunately was not achieved due to the suspect’s actions.
Lucrisia’s alleged criminal activities began on March 10 when he reportedly fired a gun at his ex-girlfriend’s residence in Mountain View. As a felon, Lucrisia was prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm or ammunition. Subsequent incidents included a robbery at a 75-year-old woman’s residence, where he stole a bag while the woman was bedridden.
On March 14, Lucrisia was involved in an altercation in Hilo, where he opened fire on officers after being instructed to exit a vehicle. During the shootout, one officer sustained injuries and was flown to Oʻahu for treatment, where he is in critical but stable condition.
Following the incident, police managed to apprehend Lucrisia’s accomplice, Silas Zion, in Mountain View, seizing the white pickup truck the pair was using. Blood was reportedly found inside the vehicle, implicating both individuals in the violent encounter.
A subsequent home invasion on March 16 led to a confrontation between Lucrisia and law enforcement officers on Ihope Road in Mountain View. Armed with a rifle and pistol, Lucrisia fired at detectives before ultimately being neutralized by return fire from officers. Despite efforts to make contact with the suspect, it was determined that Lucrisia had succumbed to his injuries.
City officials acknowledged the distress and upheaval caused by the violent events, emphasizing the risks that law enforcement officers face daily in ensuring public safety. The investigation into the incident continues as authorities seek to identify any potential accomplices of Lucrisia. Those with information are encouraged to contact the Big Island police non-emergency line.
The tragic events serve as a stark reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers encounter in the line of duty, highlighting the challenges faced in maintaining community safety amidst escalating violence.
