Manchester, UK – Manchester Arena terrorist Hashem Abedi exhibited a cold demeanor as he carried out a vicious attack on three prison officers at HMP Frankland in County Durham. The officers sustained life-threatening injuries after being ambushed in the kitchen of a separation unit by Abedi, who had fashioned makeshift knives out of cooking trays.
Abedi, who had hoarded sachets of butter, melted them down to scald a female prison officer using hot oil. Two male guards were also stabbed with the homemade knives, resulting in serious injuries. It is believed that Abedi had received assistance from other extremists in planning the attack, leading to his relocation to another jail to prevent further collaboration.
Sources revealed that the attack was not merely an assault but a premeditated terrorist act within the prison. The female officer was quickly discharged from the hospital, while her male colleagues, one in his 30s and the other around 60, faced more severe injuries. The elder guard was stabbed in the neck, while the younger officer sustained multiple stab wounds to his back, puncturing a lung.
Mark Fairhurst, national chairman of the Prison Officers’ Association (POA), noted that the two officers still hospitalized had stabilized following the attack. He emphasized the need for a thorough examination of security protocols in separation centers to prevent similar incidents.
Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick expressed concern over the security failure leading to the attack, calling for decisive action to address the issue. Abedi, previously convicted of a violent assault on a prison officer in 2020, has a history of involvement in extremist activities.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the attack, with speculations regarding the source of the weapons used by Abedi. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges posed by radicalized individuals within the prison system and the need for heightened security measures to protect prison staff and prevent future attacks.
