Security Failures Investigated After Trump Assassination Attempt in Pennsylvania

Bethel Park, Pennsylvania – The Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general has launched an investigation into the U.S. Secret Service’s handling of security for former President Donald Trump on the day a gunman attempted to assassinate him at a Pennsylvania rally. The probe aims to evaluate the Secret Service’s process for securing Trump’s campaign event on July 13, 2024.

Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, has been identified as the individual involved in the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. The shooter was killed by the Secret Service. The victim killed in the shooting was Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old from Sarver, Pennsylvania. Two other victims, David Dutch, 57, of New Kensington, Pennsylvania, and James Copenhaver, 74, of Moon Township, Pennsylvania, were injured in the incident.

The FBI has taken the lead in investigating the shooting, but a motive for the assassination attempt has not yet been identified. Investigators have accessed Crooks’ phone and computer in search of a motive, conducting numerous interviews in the process. Despite thorough investigations, no evidence of political or ideological motives has been uncovered.

Prior to the attempted assassination, moves were made to increase protection around Trump following a threat from Iran, although the two incidents appear unrelated. The Secret Service is facing scrutiny over how the shooter was able to gain rooftop access close to Trump’s rally position. Concerns have been raised about the effectiveness of the security perimeter and efforts to secure the area.

Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief who heroically shielded his family from gunfire during the rally, is being remembered as a selfless individual. Two other victims remain in critical condition following the shooting, as investigations into the incident continue. The shooting has sparked questions about the Secret Service’s preparedness and security protocols leading up to the rally.

In the aftermath of the incident, law enforcement sources are reviewing procedures to determine if adequate measures were taken to protect Trump and ensure the safety of attendees. The FBI’s investigation into the shooting, including Crooks’ movements and preparations leading up to the attack, is ongoing. The community is mourning the loss of Corey Comperatore, who acted bravely to protect his loved ones during the tragic event.
