NEW YORK — A violent attack on a 91-year-old cancer patient in Manhattan has resulted in a 15-year prison sentence for his assailant, Christian Torres, who was found guilty of attempted robbery. During a sentencing hearing on Wednesday, Torres, 45, was held accountable for a brutal confrontation that occurred on February 1, 2024. Prosecutors revealed that Torres approached Hyman Silverglad as he was walking home with groceries, attempting to steal his wallet before violently pushing him to the ground and delivering a series of blows.
Silverglad, in a poignant victim impact statement, conveyed the deep psychological and physical toll the attack has taken on him. The elderly man suffered multiple fractures, broken ribs, and severe internal injuries, which he described as leaving him bedridden and struggling to regain a semblance of normal life. He expressed in court that the pain was so overwhelming that he believed death might be preferable.
“I am terrified to leave my home without someone accompanying me,” Silverglad said. “Every moment after the assault has been marked by fear and pain, making the world outside seem dangerous.”
The assault occurred at around 10:25 p.m. on East 86th Street, where Torres targeted the vulnerable senior without any provocation. After the altercation, Torres fled the scene empty-handed as Silverglad called for help, later leading to his arrested capture days later.
This was not Torres’s first encounter with the justice system. He had previously served time for multiple crimes including robbery and arson, spending time in prison as recently as 2023. Court records indicated that he was on supervised release at the time of the attack.
In a letter to the court, Silverglad urged the judge to consider the brutality of the crime while deliberating on Torres’s punishment. “It is infuriating that someone with such a history of violence would target someone as defenseless as I am,” he stated, emphasizing the risk posed to others.
