ROWLETT, Texas — A shooting in broad daylight at Scruggs Park has left one man injured, prompting local authorities to seek assistance from the community to identify the suspects.
The incident occurred around 3 p.m. on a Saturday, following a series of fights believed to have originated from a high school football game rivalry. According to Rowlett police, the confrontation escalated quickly. Detective Cruz Hernandez reported that multiple individuals engaged in a skirmish, which culminated in gunfire. “As they were shooting at two occupants of a white Hyundai parked in the lot, we estimate that around 40 shots were fired,” Hernandez said.
During the chaos, a 20-year-old pedestrian was struck by a bullet and is now recovering after surgery to repair a severed artery. Authorities confirmed that he was not involved in the conflict and was merely in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Detectives are exploring the possibility that the shooting was an act of retaliation linked to an earlier altercation at a school football game between Rowlett and Sachse. “The same names are appearing in both cases,” Hernandez noted, emphasizing the ongoing concerns about gang-related violence in the area.
In their efforts to gather more information, police have released surveillance footage that captures at least two shooters involved in the incident. One suspect is described as a Black male, aged 25 to 35, wearing blue shorts and a white muscle shirt. He was seen walking casually away from the scene alongside two other individuals, raising suspicions that he may reside in the vicinity.
Local law enforcement is appealing to the public for assistance. “We hope that someone in the community will recognize him and help us bring those responsible to justice,” Hernandez stated. Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Preston Barkheimer at 972-463-3925.
This recent shooting underscores the pressing need for community awareness and engagement, as police work diligently to curb violence and enhance safety in Rowlett. The investigation continues, and authorities remain hopeful that the public will provide crucial leads to apprehend the individuals involved in this troubling incident.
