Shooting at Stockton Birthday Party Leaves Four Dead, Including Three Children; Gunman Allegedly Targeted Rapper MBnel

Stockton, California — A tragic birthday party in Stockton turned deadly when a mass shooting left four people dead, including three children, and injured over a dozen others. The incident on Saturday was reportedly linked to gang activity, with the shooter believed to have targeted rapper MBnel, who survived the event but was shot.

The celebration, intended to honor a two-year-old, swiftly transformed into chaos as gunfire erupted just as the birthday cake was about to be cut. Among those killed was 14-year-old Amari Peterson, whose father, Patrick Peterson, voiced his devastation, claiming the gunman was specifically aiming for the rapper.

MBnel, whose real name is Johnel Dongon, was attending the party as a guest and had traveled from Sacramento to drop off a gift. He sustained a bullet wound but survived the shooting. His father noted that MBnel was nervous and had asked him not to speak about the incident publicly. Known for tracks such as “Feelings” and “Opulent,” MBnel has gained significant following with millions of streams on platforms like Spotify.

The shooting has amplified questions surrounding community safety as victims, including local activist Jasmine Delafosse, recounted the horror witnessed. Delafosse, expected to recover from her injuries, described the scene as chaotic and traumatic, highlighting the effect of such violence on families and the community.

Stockton’s former mayor, Michael Tubbs, commented on the shooting’s impact, emphasizing that it underscores a serious issue of violence affecting a minority within the community. He related the pain of losing a loved one to gun violence, stating that such trauma lingers indefinitely and deeply affects not only the immediate victims but the wider community.

The venue where the shooting occurred is unlikely to reopen. Owner Willie Collins expressed that he can’t envision the space returning to operation after it became the site of tragedy. For the bereaved families, the aftermath is dire: they face not only emotional loss but also financial burdens associated with funeral expenses. The family of Amari Peterson has initiated a crowdfunding campaign to assist with these costs.

As officials continue to investigate the incident, no arrests have yet been made. The FBI has announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension of those responsible. Community leaders and families affected by the violence are left grappling with the pain of an event that brought unspeakable loss to a gathering meant to celebrate joy and life.
