BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Bloomington Police Department is conducting an investigation into a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a 29-year-old man on Friday evening. Authorities reported the incident took place around 9:40 p.m. at the intersection of West Howe Street and South Morton Street.
Responding officers were alerted following a 9-1-1 call from a nearby resident who reported hearing screams and a loud noise that they believed to be gunfire. The caller indicated that they saw someone lying on the ground, prompting an immediate response from law enforcement.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the man with a gunshot wound on his upper torso. First responders administered emergency aid at the scene before he was rushed to IU Health Bloomington Hospital. Sadly, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at 10:28 p.m.
Initial investigations suggest that a confrontation took place between the victim and a motorist near the location of the shooting. Witnesses reported seeing the suspect exit their vehicle and fire a single shot at the victim before returning to the car and fleeing the scene quickly, heading west on Howe Street and later turning north on Madison Street.
Further accounts indicate that a woman was heard screaming from inside the suspect’s vehicle as it sped away, adding another layer of urgency to the event. Investigators believe that the individuals involved were likely unknown to each other, which raises questions about the motive behind the shooting.
Authorities are appealing to residents in the area for help, urging those with surveillance cameras to review their footage for any evidence related to the shooting. The Bloomington Police Department has set up a hotline for people to share information and is particularly interested in details that could aid in the ongoing investigation.
With a growing number of similar incidents raising concerns about safety in the community, authorities are hopeful that tips from the public will assist them in solving this case. As the investigation continues, officials are committed to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
