Shooting of Mother by Veteran ICE Agent Sparks Controversy and Investigation in Minneapolis

Minneapolis, Minnesota — A federal agent involved in a controversial shooting that resulted in the death of a woman is being identified as Jonathan Ross, a 43-year-old Iraq War veteran with nearly two decades of service in both the Border Patrol and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Records reveal that Ross has been a deportation officer with ICE since 2015 and is currently stationed in Minnesota.

The shooting incident unfolded when 37-year-old Renee Good was fatally shot as she attempted to drive away from federal agents. Ross reportedly believed that Good was trying to run him and other agents over with her vehicle. The officer, who sustained serious injuries in a previous encounter, has since been defended by federal officials, who characterize him as an experienced law enforcement professional adhering to his training protocols.

On June 17 of last year, Ross was leading a team of agents in a failed attempt to arrest an individual living in the U.S. illegally. During that operation, he was seriously injured when the suspect’s vehicle accelerated with Ross’ arm caught inside. Prosecutors stated that the suspect had raised his hands in compliance before fleeing, dragging Ross down the street and causing him significant physical harm requiring emergency medical attention.

Video footage from the recent shooting has triggered debate over whether the agent’s actions were justifiable. In response to the rising scrutiny, the FBI has initiated an investigation into the use of deadly force in the incident, while protesters demand that Ross face criminal charges. Minnesota authorities have also expressed a desire to investigate further.

Officials in Washington have rallied behind Ross, underscoring his long service record. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem indicated that the agent acted out of a belief that his life and the lives of his colleagues were threatened. Vice President JD Vance commended the agent’s dedication, highlighting the risks he faces in his line of work and emphasizing his commitment to national security.

Ross’s military background includes deployment to Iraq from 2004 to 2005, where he served as a machine gunner on a combat patrol team. After returning from the conflict, he began his law enforcement career with the Border Patrol in 2007. Over the years, he has worked in various capacities, including as a field intelligence agent and an instructor for firearms and active shooter scenarios.

In light of the latest shooting, federal officials refrained from disclosing Ross’s identity for security reasons, citing concerns for his safety and that of his family. A representative noted that he is a member of ICE’s specialized response team, which undergoes rigorous training to prepare for high-stakes situations.

As the investigation continues, the community remains polarized, with some rallying behind law enforcement while others call for accountability. The outcome of the FBI’s review could have significant implications not only for Ross but for broader discussions surrounding the use of force by federal agents in immigration enforcement scenarios.
