Star Man Sentenced to 45 Years for Brutal Attack and Rape of Ex-Partner

STAR, Idaho – A 47-year-old man from Star, Idaho, has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for a horrific crime that shocked the community. Matthew Blazek, convicted of multiple charges including rape, use of a deadly weapon, forcible penetration, domestic violence, and attempted strangulation, will serve a minimum of 20 years before being eligible for parole.

The heinous incident took place in July 2023 when Blazek broke into the home of a former partner and subjected her to a brutal attack. The victim, awakening to find Blazek looming over her, endured hours of physical assault, including beatings, strangulation, and threats with a knife, culminating in a harrowing rape. The impact of the assault left the victim with extensive injuries across her body, prompting her to contact law enforcement once the assailant had vacated the scene.

Following a jury’s verdict of guilt in January, the presiding judge characterized Blazek as a high risk for reoffending, labeling his actions as “predatory.” With a minimum 20-year prison term and a maximum of 45 years, Blazek faces the prospect of being incarcerated until the age of 92 if he serves the entirety of his sentence.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of intimate partner violence and the enduring impact it can have on survivors. The courage of the victim in coming forward and the swift administration of justice in this instance highlight the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.

As the community processes the outcome of this trial, discussions around the need for increased support for survivors, stronger enforcement of laws against domestic violence, and the importance of prevention efforts come to the forefront. It is crucial for society to continue working towards creating a safe and secure environment for all individuals, free from fear of such atrocities.
