Fort Worth, Texas — A 77-year-old woman is courageously recounting a terrifying home invasion, using her experience as a cautionary tale for others to remain vigilant. June Gruebel vividly recalls the violent encounter that took place Monday night, when an unexpected intruder barged into her home, forcing her to confront a brutal assault.
Describing the moment he entered, Gruebel recounted her immediate fear. “When I saw his face, it felt surreal. It was something I never expected,” she said. Despite her bruises and injuries, she maintains an unwavering spirit, determined that the attacker will not control her life.
As the ordeal began, Gruebel confronted the intruder. “I asked him what he wanted, but he simply hit me,” she said, detailing the onset of the attack. The assailant overpowered her, kicking her sides and back while pinning her down. “He was just relentless, jumping on me,” she added.
The violence escalated as the attacker rampaged through her kitchen, hurling items from her refrigerator. Gruebel described how one blow from a kitchen chair struck her head, adding to the chaos around her. Despite the immediate danger, she focused on one goal: escape.
“I could see shards of glass scattered around me. I kept urging myself, I have to get out,” Gruebel stated. Summoning her strength, she crawled toward her front door, where she remembered the emergency device she wore around her neck.
With newfound determination, she reached the door, feeling the string of her emergency button. “I got outside and knew I had the way to call for help,” she said.
When Fort Worth police arrived, they confronted 21-year-old Cristian Mendez, who allegedly attempted to disarm one of the officers. Mendez has been charged with burglary and attempted assault on law enforcement.
Gruebel expressed gratitude for surviving the ordeal. “I truly believe someone was looking out for me,” she reflected. Offering a piece of advice to other women living alone, she urged, “Make sure you lock your doors at all times.”
