Awgbu, Nigeria — Authorities in Anambra State have apprehended a 28-year-old man for allegedly perpetrating violent acts during a community festival. Ifesinachi Ezeolu is accused of being the individual behind a masquerade that was filmed attacking residents and disrupting events in the Orumba North Local Government Area.
The chaotic scene unfolded over the weekend during the Ofala Festival, a cultural celebration honoring the late traditional ruler of Awgbu. Videos circulating on social media depict Ezeolu in a masquerade costume aggressively pursuing bystanders and damaging property, raising alarm among community members.
In response to the unrest, the Anambra State Police Command quickly detained Ezeolu and confirmed his involvement. Police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga noted that the brutal behavior prompted an outpouring of concern from the public, highlighting reports of intimidation and unwanted aggression during the festivities.
Ikenga stated that the police are committed to ensuring that cultural practices do not infringe on citizens’ rights. “While we respect cultural expressions, these activities must occur peacefully and lawfully,” he explained. “Any actions that instigate fear or chaos will be met with immediate intervention.”
Continuing investigations aim to identify additional individuals tied to the incident. The police are determined to bring all responsible parties to justice. In the press release, the police emphasized their dedication to collaborating with local leaders and stakeholders to safeguard the community’s safety while honoring its traditions.
Eyewitness accounts indicated the masquerader’s reckless actions included forcibly pushing motorcycle riders off their vehicles and terrorizing those attending the festival. This has prompted residents to call for increased oversight of cultural events to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
As the story unfolds, the police have assured the community that they are taking steps to address safety concerns and promote a more secure environment for future celebrations. The Commissioner of Police for Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, reaffirmed the commitment to working closely with traditional leaders to ensure cultural celebrations remain joyous and free from violence.
