Terrorism Threat: HURIWA Condemns Federal Government’s Release of Boko Haram Militants, Calls for Prosecution and Accountability

Abuja, Nigeria – The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has vehemently criticized the Federal Government’s policy of releasing ‘repentant’ Boko Haram terrorists, pointing out that it has contributed to the escalating violent attacks in northeastern Nigeria. The group firmly believes that releasing these individuals instead of subjecting them to anti-terrorism laws only serves to embolden terrorists and further destabilize the region.

Emmanuel Onwubiko, the national coordinator of HURIWA, expressed concerns over the practice of freeing Boko Haram militants after their supposed deradicalization and reintegration, arguing that it poses a significant threat in combating the terrorist group. He emphasized the importance of holding these individuals accountable for their crimes against humanity through prosecution, rather than allowing them to reintegrate into society.

The recent brutal attack by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP militants, resulting in the deaths of 40 farmers in the Dumba community near Baga, Borno State, has spurred HURIWA to call for stronger measures to protect civilians and military personnel from the escalating violence. The group also condemned the loss of six soldiers in a separate attack, urging the Federal Government to abandon the current practice of releasing Boko Haram terrorists and instead focus on prosecuting them to prevent further bloodshed.

In addition to demanding legal accountability for the released militants, HURIWA has urged for financial compensation to be provided to the families of the victims of the recent attacks. The group emphasized the government’s duty to prioritize the safety of its citizens and ensure the nation’s future security.

HURIWA’s stance against the government’s release of Boko Haram terrorists highlights the need for a more vigilant approach to combating terrorism in Nigeria. The continued release of these individuals only serves to perpetuate the cycle of violence and poses a significant threat to the overall stability and security of the region. It remains crucial for authorities to reassess their approach and prioritize the prosecution of those responsible for heinous acts of terror, in order to truly address the root causes of the insurgency and protect the lives of innocent civilians and military personnel.
