Texas 17-year-old blames his acne medicine after he shot his two friends because he wanted to commit homicide

FRIENDSWOOD, TX – An 18-year-old from Galveston County has been sentenced to 50 years in prison after admitting he fatally shot one friend and critically wounded another, bringing a tragic end to a gathering just days before Christmas.

Connor Lynn Hilton pleaded guilty to the murder of Ethan Riley, 18, and the shooting of Benjamin Bliek, then 19, at Hilton’s home in Friendswood on December 23, 2023. Authorities said both victims had visited Hilton that evening to see a newly acquired handgun when Hilton unexpectedly turned the weapon on them. Riley died at the scene, while Bliek survived after a lengthy recovery in intensive care and numerous rehabilitation efforts.

Court documents show that the violence occurred with little warning. Bliek and Riley were examining the firearm when Hilton suddenly fired at both of them, striking their heads. Another person inside the home at the time told police they heard two gunshots and quickly locked themselves in a bathroom, calling 911 while Hilton was heard in distress outside the door.

Officers arriving at the scene encountered Hilton outside, visibly emotional. When questioned about possible injuries inside, Hilton gestured toward the house and informed officers that two people were inside and likely dead. Investigators found Riley and Bliek lying close together, both with gunshot wounds to the head. A revolver matching the wounds was recovered at the scene.

According to police interviews and the defendant’s own statements, Hilton admitted there had been no dispute or argument leading up to the attack. He told officers he had long contemplated committing a homicide and confessed to targeting his friends without provocation. Investigators say Hilton even acknowledged that he understood the gravity of his actions and expected to face consequences.

Bliek, who survived the ordeal, addressed Hilton directly during sentencing, expressing anger and refusing forgiveness for the impact on both families. Riley’s father also spoke, describing his son as a source of love and happiness.

Initially, Hilton’s defense team considered arguing that his use of acne medication contributed to his mental state at the time of the shootings. However, this approach was abandoned after the court declined to hear expert testimony on the potential psychological side effects.

Following the shootings, Hilton was first arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault. He was released after posting a $1 million bond, but as Riley’s condition worsened and ultimately resulted in his death, prosecutors upgraded the charges to murder, leading to Hilton’s rearrest on Christmas night.

Hilton, who was only 17 at the time of the shootings, ultimately pleaded guilty and will not be eligible for parole for decades. The sentencing concludes a case that stunned the community, leaving families of both victims seeking to heal from a tragedy they described as senseless and deeply scarring.

Officials say the gun Hilton used had been purchased for him by his mother at his request. The weapon was recovered at the scene and taken as evidence.

Authorities did not disclose further details on the third individual present in the home during the incident for privacy reasons.

With Hilton’s guilty plea and sentencing, the case comes to a close, but the effects of the violence continue to ripple through the families of the victims and the local community.
