Tragedy Strikes as New Orleans Sous Chef Shot While Picking Up Son from Daycare

NEW ORLEANS — A man who was shot and killed during a carjacking while picking up his son from daycare has been identified as Carl Morgan, a sous chef at a prominent local restaurant. The shooting occurred Tuesday evening outside the Abeona House Child Discovery Center on Canal Street, leaving family and friends in mourning.

Morgan, who was known for his culinary skills and dedication to his family, was described by colleagues as a person who brought light to any situation. “Everyone is in shock and grief,” said Christian Pendleton, general manager of Brennan’s Restaurant, where Morgan worked. “He was not just a talented cook but a devoted father.”

New Orleans police reported that the incident unfolded around 5:15 p.m. Authorities later apprehended 21-year-old Raymond Wells, the alleged shooter, who was discovered in a stolen vehicle on Interstate 10, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. His condition was described as critical, and if he survives, he is expected to face charges of first-degree murder.

Investigators remain unclear about the circumstances surrounding Wells’ injury, whether it was self-inflicted or the result of someone else’s actions. Police believe Wells may have initiated gunfire in the vicinity shortly before encountering Morgan. “There were reports of shots fired a block from where Morgan was shot,” said police superintendent Nicholas Gernon. He suggested that Wells might have been engaging in illicit activities that prompted the violence.

Witnesses indicated that a teacher at the daycare quickly moved children to safety upon hearing gunfire, helping to avert further tragedy. Rev. Shawn Anglim, a local pastor, expressed heartbreak over the incident. “A man lost his life, a child lost his father, and a partner lost her love,” he said. “We all lost a radiant presence in our community.”

Morgan’s partner took to social media to express her sorrow over the loss, highlighting the devastating impact on their family. Loved ones depicted him as a natural leader both in the kitchen and at home, emphasizing his warmth and generosity.

In honor of Morgan, Brennan’s Restaurant will tribute him at the upcoming Fried Chicken Festival by featuring some of his signature dishes. Pendleton noted, “There’s no better way to celebrate a chef than by sharing their food and bringing happiness to those who enjoy it.” All proceeds from the event will be donated to Morgan’s family.

The senseless violence has unsettled the community, raising concerns over safety and the alarming rates of crime in the area. As residents process this tragedy, tributes and remembrances of Morgan’s life continue to pour in, reflecting the deep loss felt by many.
