Overland Park, Kansas — A community in Clay County came together Tuesday night for a candlelight vigil to honor Chris Wells, a 41-year-old father, who was shot and killed outside his home the previous day. Mourners gathered at the crossroads of 78th Street and Monroe Avenue, united in grief as they remembered a beloved neighbor and friend.
Wells was reportedly shot multiple times Monday morning by Jeffrey King, 42, a neighbor with a documented history of harassment toward Wells’s family and others in the area. King has been charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action and is currently being held in the Clay County Detention Center on a bond set at $5 million.
During the vigil, participants lit candles and left flowers near the site of the tragedy. More than 100 people attended, some wearing Kansas City Chiefs gear to celebrate Wells’s passion for the team. As stories circulated among attendees, friends and family reflected on Wells’s dedication to his loved ones and his deep ties to the community.
Wells’s mother spoke fondly of her son, emphasizing not only his love for the Chiefs but also the way he consistently put his family first. Neighbors lamented the loss of a guardian figure who would go to great lengths to protect his community. “Chris would do anything for his family,” one neighbor remarked, highlighting Wells’s role as a defender and supporter.
Garet Arnold, a youth pastor for Wells’s children at Northland Cathedral, urged attendees to remember the man Wells was, rather than solely focusing on the circumstances of his death. “It’s important that we know Chris’s life is not how it ended, but the legacy he left behind,” Arnold stated, encapsulating the sentiment of many in attendance.
As the candles flickered through the night, children of Wells shared treasured memories, including outings to Chiefs games and hunting trips, bringing smiles even in the midst of sorrow.
