Burnsville, Minnesota, is reeling from a tragic incident that unfolded on Sunday, leaving three first responders dead. The perpetrator, identified as Shannon Cortez Gooden, ultimately took his own life during a standoff with authorities. Gooden, aged 38, succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office report.
Reports indicate that Gooden was armed with multiple firearms and a significant amount of ammunition while barricaded inside his residence. The victims of the shooting were police officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, along with emergency medical technician Adam Finseth. Fortunately, seven children present in the home emerged unharmed from the harrowing situation.
Court records from Dakota County revealed that Gooden had been barred from possessing firearms following a 2008 conviction for second-degree assault. Although he completed probation in 2013 and had his voting rights restored, a stipulation remained prohibiting him from owning or handling firearms for life.
In an attempt to regain his gun rights, Gooden petitioned the court in 2020, claiming he had undergone rehabilitation and sought a second chance to reintegrate into society. However, his plea was met with opposition from the District Attorney’s Office, citing Gooden’s history of encounters with law enforcement involving assaults, disorderly conduct, and numerous traffic offenses.
Despite his efforts, Gooden’s petition to restore his gun rights was denied by District County Judge Dannia Edwards without commentary. CNN’s attempts to reach out to his attorney, Mathew Higbee, for comment on the matter were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
