WINDER, Georgia — A 15-year-old boy appeared in court on Tuesday for his alleged role in a tragic shooting at Apalachee High School, revealing a striking transformation in his appearance. Colt Gray, now handcuffed and dressed in a smart outfit of a collared shirt and khakis, looked markedly different from the disheveled teen with bleached hair who was previously seen during hearings.
Gray faces serious charges, including the murder of two teachers and two students on Sept. 4. His new appearance has drawn attention as he prepares for his legal proceedings. During the hearing, his attorney, Aisha Broderick, informed the court that they are awaiting a crucial medical evaluation that will influence forthcoming legal motions and the case’s overall direction.
In May, Gray’s former attorney indicated he was considering a guilty plea after consultations with a psychologist. The reasons for the change in legal representation remain unclear. The evaluation is anticipated to be completed by the end of February, paving the way for further legal steps.
The shooting, now a haunting chapter for the community, resulted in the deaths of educators Cristina Irimie and Richard Aspinwall, both experienced and beloved members of the school staff, as well as students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo. Additionally, another teacher and eight students were injured, underscoring the horror that unfolded within the school walls.
Gray has been indicted on 55 different counts, which include four counts of murder and numerous counts of aggravated assault. His father, Colin Gray, has also been charged in connection with the case, accused of providing Colt with the firearm used in the tragedy during the previous Christmas. These charges against Colin Gray include two counts each of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter, compounded by multiple counts of cruelty to children.
Family members have begun to express their frustration and sorrow, with Colt’s grandfather suggesting that Colin should share the blame for the environment that contributed to the violence.
