SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY, Pa. — A tragic incident unfolded Thursday morning when two Pennsylvania State Troopers were shot while responding to a call regarding a welfare check in northeastern Susquehanna County. The situation escalated when the officers were ambushed after arriving at the scene, resulting in serious injuries for both troopers.
Around 11 a.m., police received a 911 call reporting gunfire in the vicinity. Troopers Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins responded to the location on State Route 171 in Thompson Township. They encountered gunfire from a male suspect, identified as 61-year-old Carmine Faino, who was ultimately shot and killed during the confrontation. Tragically, the incident also involved the death of Lori Wasko, 57, who was shot by Faino before the troopers arrived.
Both troopers sustained severe injuries and were transported by air to a nearby medical facility, where they are now reported to be in stable condition, according to officials. A coordinated response by various law enforcement agencies successfully secured the area, eliminating any further threat to the public.
Governor Josh Shapiro addressed the media later in the day, expressing his concern for the injured officers. “Lori and I are praying for these brave state troopers,” he said during a press conference. He noted he had spoken with Colonel Paris, the state police commissioner, who was on-site during the turmoil. The governor praised the actions of Trooper Perechinsky, stating that his decisive actions were likely responsible for saving lives that day.
Shapiro planned to visit Trooper Jenkins shortly after his news briefing and highlighted the bravery demonstrated by both injured troopers. “Trooper Parishinski acted decisively and thoughtfully, showcasing the very best of the Pennsylvania State Police,” he said.
The ongoing investigation aims to piece together the details of the incident as officials continue to gather information about the shooter’s background. The local community, with a population of around 38,000, looks on with shock as law enforcement navigates the complexities of this devastating event.
Reactions from lawmakers echoed sentiments of support for the injured troopers. Congressman Dan Meuser tweeted about the recovery of the officers and the importance of community prayers, while U.S. Senator John Fetterman also expressed his concern for the troopers involved.
Susquehanna County, noted for its lush mountains and recreational areas, serves as a reminder of the challenges law enforcement faces in communities across the state. As authorities work diligently to address the aftermath of this incident, the resilience of both local officials and the state police will undoubtedly emerge in the days ahead.
