LAGOS, Nigeria — A severe incident involving a passenger on an Ibom Air flight led to a lifetime ban from all member airlines for the individual involved, as announced by the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON). The event unfolded during the flight from Uyo to Lagos on August 10, 2025, and has raised significant concerns about passenger conduct on aircraft.
In a statement released the following day, AON fully supported Ibom Air’s management in handling what officials termed one of the most serious violations of passenger decorum seen this year. According to reports, the trouble began when Comfort Emmanson reportedly ignored safety directives to turn off her mobile phone prior to departure. The situation deteriorated upon landing when she allegedly attacked crew members and attempted to wield a fire extinguisher as a weapon.
AON expressed its dismay, noting that such behavior jeopardizes the safety of everyone on board. The statement highlighted the incident as “a sustained, violent outburst” that not only endangered the crew and passengers but also put the aircraft’s integrity at risk. The association’s oversight council determined that permanent exclusion from air travel was necessary for Emmanson, banning her from all airlines affiliated with AON.
The group also pointed to growing instances of passenger misbehavior overall, referencing other recent incidents involving notable figures, including a well-known Nigerian musician and a former senator. These events have sparked discussions about the increasing challenges airlines face in ensuring safety and order during flights.
AON called for a reassessment of airport security measures, urging the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to enhance protocols to better safeguard passengers and staff. The association emphasized that ongoing standards for passenger conduct need to be strictly enforced to prevent similar incidents in the future.
In the face of rising unruly behavior, AON reiterated its commitment to upholding a zero-tolerance policy. The statement underscored that while passengers have avenues to voice their complaints, such actions should adhere to proper procedures without compromising the safety and well-being of others.
AON spokesperson, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to maintaining high standards of safety and security for everyone involved in air travel. As the airline industry grapples with ongoing issues of unruliness in the skies, the responses and policies put in place will be crucial in determining the future landscape of air travel in Nigeria.
