Houston, Texas – CenterPoint Energy is calling on residents in Houston to assist in keeping linemen safe following a series of violent attacks while they were working to restore power to individuals affected by Hurricane Beryl. CEO Jason Wells took to social media to address the threats that the linemen have been facing, stating that over 100 linemen had to be evacuated due to shots being fired at them.
The situation escalated to the point where law enforcement had to intervene and make an arrest in response to the criminal behavior directed towards the linemen. Houston Police Department confirmed that a gun was used and rocks were thrown at the crews while they were working on restoring power.
In light of the attacks, CenterPoint reiterated that the safety of their employees, contractors, and support personnel remains a top priority. Despite the challenges faced by the community without electricity, the company emphasized that resorting to violence against those working hard to restore power is unacceptable and counterproductive.
Both Gov. Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick condemned the violence, emphasizing that resorting to such behaviors will only hinder the restoration process. They also mentioned that legislative actions will be taken to impose stricter penalties on individuals involved in violent acts towards utility workers.
The ongoing incidents of violence have prompted CenterPoint to seek assistance from government officials and law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of their crews. The company stressed the importance of creating a safe working environment for the men and women dedicated to restoring power to the community.
