Violence Erupts at Middlesbrough Club as Man Blames Deceased Brother for Assault on Door Supervisor

MIDDLESBROUGH, England — A 39-year-old man has been sentenced to more than four years in prison for his violent assault on a door supervisor during a nightclub closing. The incident occurred at the Longlands Social Club in August 2021, where Stephen Leadbeater aggressively attacked the victim after a confrontation escalated.

Prosecutor Cainan Lonsdale detailed the sequence of events that night. Leadbeater reacted after the door supervisor attempted to clear drinkers from the premises, sparking a physical altercation. Upon seeing the scuffle, Leadbeater charged in, pushing and striking the victim, who was already grappling with two other individuals.

As the confrontation intensified, the victim bent down, allowing Leadbeater to seize a nearby bottle and strike him. The melees between the men escalated, leading to a wrestling match that concluded with Leadbeater inflicting multiple injuries, including biting the victim and repeatedly stamping on his head. The doorman sustained significant cuts from the ordeal.

In a separate incident on September 19, 2023, Leadbeater caused disruption to the rail network when he climbed onto a signal box between Middlesbrough and Thornaby, prompting emergency response efforts to coax him down.

Leadbeater, who pleaded guilty to charges of grievous bodily harm with intent and causing a public nuisance, was described by his defense attorney, John Nixon, as struggling with mental health challenges at the time of both offenses.

Judge Jonathan Carroll addressed Leadbeater’s behavior during sentencing, which lasted four years and six months. The judge condemned his attempt to evade responsibility by suggesting a mistaken identity with his deceased brother. “You seemed willing to invoke the memory of your brother to divert blame from your actions,” Carroll remarked.

Leadbeater’s actions have raised concerns about public safety and the mental health issues that can manifest in violent behavior. The ramifications of these incidents serve as a reminder of the complexities surrounding mental health and public conduct.
