Oudtshoorn, South Africa — A violent altercation at the Oudtshoorn Correctional Centre on Wednesday resulted in the death of an inmate and injuries to four correctional officials. The confrontation erupted during a routine search for contraband when inmates resisted and launched a coordinated attack on the staff members.
During the operation, intended to locate illegal items, officials encountered fierce resistance, leading to a stabbing incident. Department of Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo reported that the situation escalated quickly as inmates turned aggressive, targeting the officers involved.
Injuries sustained during the confrontation were significant, with three officials suffering serious stab wounds to the head, face, and back. Nxumalo emphasized the gravity of the wounds, indicating that the officials were confronted by hostile inmates intent on causing harm. All injured personnel received immediate medical care and have since been discharged.
Following the incident, the Department of Correctional Services initiated an internal investigation to scrutinize the events leading up to the inmate’s death and the extent of force employed by the officials. Nxumalo confirmed that officials confiscated various weapons, cellphones, and drugs during the search, reflecting ongoing efforts to curb violence and contraband within the facility.
The department has taken precautionary measures by isolating the inmates directly involved in the stabbing. These individuals have been transferred to single cells as they face internal disciplinary proceedings. Although operations at the centre have stabilized, the facility remains under lockdown, with all visitor access suspended until further notice.
Makgothi Thobakgale, the National Commissioner of Correctional Services, condemned the violence and noted that the involvement of the same group of inmates in both the initial resistance and the stabbing indicates a troubling trend. He stated that further searches within the facility uncovered additional weapons, underscoring a significant security risk.
The commissioner expressed concern about the implications of such violent incidents, which detract from rehabilitative endeavors and jeopardize the safety of both inmates and correctional staff. A thorough investigation is underway, focusing on the sequence of events, actions taken by both inmates and officials, and adherence to operational protocols during the search.
Authorities are determined to enhance security measures and mitigate the risk of future violence, recognizing the need for effective management in correctional environments. The troubling incident has highlighted the ongoing challenges within South Africa’s prison system as officials work to ensure a safer atmosphere for all parties involved.
