EDMONTON, ALBERTA – An Edmonton man has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a violent random assault that took place in central Edmonton. The Edmonton Police Service announced the charges against a 41-year-old man following an incident last week that left a 60-year-old man severely injured.
According to the EPS, the attack occurred on July 11 when the 60-year-old victim was walking to a gas station in the area of 92 Street and Jasper Avenue. The assailant, without provocation, viciously assaulted the victim to the point of unconsciousness before attempting to strangle him with a shopping bag. Fortunately, EPS officers were alerted to the situation by shouts for help and quickly intervened.
The EPS Downtown Branch BEATS team rushed to the scene and confronted the suspect, who attempted to flee but was captured after a short pursuit. The victim was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries but has since been discharged.
The suspect, identified as Storm Saskatchewan, was also taken to the hospital for evaluation. Reports indicate that the suspect and victim did not have any prior connection. Saskatchewan has a history of criminal activities, with authorities suspecting drug intoxication playing a role in the assault.
Acting Inspector Michael Dreilich of the EPS Investigations Branch commended the officers for their swift response, stating that their actions likely saved the victim’s life. He emphasized the zero-tolerance policy for such random acts of violence in the city, denouncing the attack as unacceptable.
Saskatchewan has been charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder and is currently in custody. The authorities are urging the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
