Violent Dog Walker Sentenced to Five Years for Brutal Assault

Glasgow, Scotland – Ian McDonald, 52, received a sentencing at the High Court in Glasgow for a violent assault that left the victim hospitalized for weeks and in need of ongoing care from relatives. The incident occurred on November 16, 2023, when McDonald, while out walking his dog, physically attacked the victim, resulting in severe injuries and permanent damage.

Initially faced with an attempted murder charge, McDonald ultimately pleaded guilty to assaulting the victim, causing severe injury, disfigurement, and endangering his life. The judge, Lady Drummond, handed down a sentence of five years and three months, with an additional three years of supervision upon release.

During the trial, details emerged of the brutal nature of the attack, with McDonald punching, kicking, and stamping on the victim’s head and body. The victim sustained a severe traumatic brain injury, along with fractures to his ribs, face, and nasal bones, and a collapsed lung. Despite being discharged from the hospital in December 2023, the victim continues to experience cognitive impairment and relies on family members for support.

This incident was not McDonald’s first involvement in violent behavior, as it was revealed in court that he had previous convictions for assault. According to a pre-sentencing social work report, McDonald tends to resort to violence in conflict situations, and at times, extreme violence. Defense attorney, Callum Hiller, mentioned that McDonald had served in the armed forces for many years.

In addition to the prison sentence and supervision, McDonald was also issued a non-harassment order preventing him from approaching or contacting the victim for a period of 10 years. This case serves as a grim reminder of the serious consequences of violent behavior and the long-lasting impact it can have on victims and their families.
