Violent Hastings Man Given 8-Year Sentence for Attack on Pensioner

Hastings, East Sussex – A Hastings man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for a violent attack on a pensioner in the town. Joseph Charlott, 22, of Deepdene Gardens, was found guilty of four offenses after a three-day trial at Lewes Crown Court on October 3.

The sentencing came after Charlott caused grievous bodily harm with intent, assaulted an emergency worker, was found in possession of an offensive weapon, and committed criminal damage. The victim, a 77-year-old man, suffered serious injuries including a fractured shoulder blade, fractured ribs, and a fractured chest bone.

Sussex Police started an investigation following the assault on Malvern Way in Hastings. Evidence revealed that Charlott forcibly entered the victim’s motorhome on May 12, 2023. When confronted by the owner and the police were called, Charlott responded with violence, knocking the victim to the ground and repeatedly kicking him.

Temporary Detective Sergeant Jake O’Reilly praised the efforts of Sussex Police in investigating, locating, arresting, and charging Charlott. Following a guilty verdict by the jury, Charlott was sentenced to five years in prison with an additional three years on extended license due to his dangerous nature.

The prosecution highlighted the seriousness of the crimes committed by Charlott, emphasizing the level of violence against a vulnerable member of the public and police officers. The outcome of the trial brought closure to the victims, with hopes that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others considering such violent acts.

The case serves as a reminder of the dedication and hard work of law enforcement in ensuring that justice is served for victims of violent crimes. The extended sentence reflects the severity of the offenses committed by Charlott and the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions.
