HOUSTON, TX – Two teenagers are facing serious charges after a shooting spree at a Houston apartment complex that left one man dead and another injured, authorities reported. The incident, allegedly driven by jealousy, underscores the tragic unintended consequences of perceived betrayal.
Investigators say Fernando Amaya and Christopher Portillo Luna, both 17, are accused of the murder of 41-year-old Marcos Cotto Torres. The fatal shooting occurred in the early morning hours of March 18. Police were called to the scene in West Houston following reports of gunfire and discovered two male victims.
Cotto Torres was found unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom with gunshot wounds to his rear, and he was pronounced dead on the scene. Another man, who remains unnamed and was struck in the buttocks, was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The motive behind the attack is believed to revolve around a romantic rivalry. Police documents reveal that Amaya suspected his girlfriend, who was reportedly dating a man living in the apartment, of infidelity. He confided to his girlfriend his intention to assault the apartment and then take his own life. The other man, however, was not harmed in the shooting.
Security footage from the building shows the two suspects fleeing the scene in a white SUV, identified by officials as belonging to a family member. At the site of the attack, investigators recovered 84 shell casings from what appeared to be an AK-style rifle.
Amaya was apprehended just hours after the incident took place, with Portillo Luna taken into custody shortly after. Both suspects are currently behind bars with bond amounts set in excess of $1 million each. They are slated to appear in court later this month.
The investigation into the death of Marcos Torres continues as law enforcement digs deeper into the circumstances leading up to the shooting. The local community remains stunned, grappling with the violence that erupted so close to home.
This case highlights the perilous outcomes when emotions escalate into violence and serves as a reminder of the devastating effects on everyone involved—not just the intended targets. As authorities pursue justice, the focus on curbing such attacks remains paramount.
